Pebble

Pebble

I introduced Pebble to the world as she was upset about being a colour she thought was dull. The story is to help young children realise that we are all different and can be happy in our own bodies and minds and enjoy our lives as we are. It's okay to 'dress up' but it's also ok to be ourselves and be happy as ourselves.

Review of Pebble by Libby Pentreath

A gentle, uplifting story that helps children embrace who they are — in all their colours, shapes, and differences.

Overview

Pebble is a beautifully simple and emotionally meaningful children’s book by Libby Pentreath. At just 12 pages, it delivers a powerful message: every child is unique, valuable, and worthy of self‑love. The story introduces Pebble, a character who feels upset about being a colour she believes is “dull,” and follows her journey toward understanding that being different is not something to hide — it’s something to celebrate.

Themes and Emotional Depth

1. Self‑Acceptance and Identity

Pebble’s emotional struggle mirrors the insecurities many children face about their appearance, abilities, or identity. The book gently teaches that it’s okay to be different, it’s okay to be yourself, and you don’t need to “dress up” to be worthy.

2. Positivity and Emotional Growth

The narrative encourages children to challenge negative thoughts and embrace positivity, confidence, and self‑belief.

3. Diversity and Inclusion

The story touches on themes of ethnicity, skin tone, and the beauty of human difference, making it especially valuable in multicultural classrooms and families.

4. Healing and Resilience (Alternative Interpretation)

One description of the book suggests it can also be read as a gentle exploration of coping with loss and finding emotional healing through nature and symbolism.

Style and Presentation

The book features bright, child‑friendly illustrations and simple, accessible language suitable for ages 7–10. Its square picture‑book format makes it ideal for reading aloud, and the tone is warm, encouraging, and supportive.

Educational and Social Value

Pebble is especially useful for:

  • PSHE lessons
  • anti‑bullying discussions
  • conversations about diversity

  • helping children express insecurities safely

Its message is universal, but its simplicity makes it particularly effective for young readers who are just beginning to understand themselves.
