My Feet Are Just Mine

My Feet Are Just Mine

I began to create RhythmScripts because I was working closely with children on the autism spectrum and their families. Parents then asked me to address individual challenges through a specially scripted poem/words that would help them cope in certain situations or difficulties- so I began to write a bit like Dr Suess with humour and rhythmic repetition. The parents and children who have had these RhythmScripts have been very positive about how they have helped in their lives. This particular RhythmScript is about not touching other peoples feet (something that a child was focussed on). I hope you enjoy the story and that if needed, it helps!

Review of My Feet Are Just Mine by Libby Pentreath

A rhythmic, supportive, and child‑centred book designed to help young people — especially those with autism — understand themselves and navigate a confusing world.

Overview

My Feet Are Just Mine is a 12‑page illustrated children’s book by Libby Pentreath, published in 2022. It forms part of her RhythmScripts series — a set of books created specifically to support children with autism and other learning differences. These books are written to help children understand everyday challenges through playful language, repetition, and gentle humour.

The book is short, accessible, and intentionally simple, making it ideal for early readers or for adults to share with children who benefit from clear, rhythmic storytelling.

Themes and Emotional Depth

1. Self‑Awareness and Body Confidence

Although the title focuses on feet, the underlying message is broader: helping children recognise and accept their own bodies, boundaries, and experiences. The book encourages a sense of ownership — my feet are mine — which is especially important for children who struggle with sensory or social understanding.

2. Autism‑Friendly Communication

Pentreath’s RhythmScripts differ from traditional “social stories.” They are:

  • less prescriptive
  • more flexible
  • more playful in tone
  • built around rhythm and repetition

This approach mirrors the way many autistic children enjoy playing with sounds, patterns, and repeated phrases. It helps them absorb meaning through enjoyment rather than instruction.

3. Navigating a Perplexing World

The book acknowledges that the world can feel confusing or overwhelming for autistic children. Through simple language and a single, focused theme, it offers reassurance and clarity.

Style and Presentation

  • Square picture‑book format (216 × 216 mm)
  • 12 pages, making it manageable for children with shorter attention spans
  • Illustrated, with visuals that support comprehension
  • Humorous, rhythmic language designed to be memorable and engaging

The tone is gentle, positive, and supportive — ideal for home, school, or therapeutic settings.

Educational and Social Value

My Feet Are Just Mine is especially useful for:

  • children with autism
  • children with ADHD or sensory differences
  • early PSHE lessons
  • speech and language support
  • building body awareness and personal boundaries

It can also help parents and educators open conversations about identity, autonomy, and self‑acceptance.

Strengths

  • Autism‑informed design and language
  • Simple, rhythmic structure that aids understanding
  • Warm, humorous tone
  • Clear educational purpose
  • Short, accessible format

Conclusion

My Feet Are Just Mine is a thoughtful, supportive children’s book that uses rhythm, repetition, and gentle humour to help young people — especially autistic children — understand themselves and feel more confident in their bodies. Libby Pentreath’s approach is compassionate and practical, offering a tool that is both enjoyable to read and genuinely helpful for children navigating a complex world.
