RhythmScripts can be used to help children with or without autism to help them navigate and understand the world around them which can be quite perplexing and often challenging for the child and the wider network supporting the child. These stories differ from social stories (typically Carol Gray’s social stories) – they are less prescriptive and are more flexible and have a humorous, rhythmic approach in the use of language and its constructs. What I noticed about young people with autism is that they can often play with words and their sounds and relish repeating sentences which sound exciting. Using this approach can also give them an understanding of the social meaning and simple message within the scripts.
